Relocating to a new country is never easy, and for Kateryna Polishchuk, a psychologist and psychotherapist specializing in crisis intervention, emotional burnout, and adaptation processes, the transition to the Netherlands in July 2023 came with many challenges. While seeking safety and new professional opportunities, she quickly realized that understanding the Dutch job market was more difficult than expected.
"I had experience and qualifications, but I didn’t know how to adapt my CV, craft compelling cover letters, or navigate Dutch recruitment processes—these things are not as common in Ukraine. I had no idea where to start, and in the beginning, I felt disappointed and overwhelmed. Additionally, networking was a challenge, as I had no established professional connections in the country."
Kateryna first heard about JobOnTrack through a friend who recommended the program. Intrigued by its structured approach to job searching and networking, she decided to join. "I needed not just theoretical advice but practical tools and real-life success stories to inspire my journey," she explains.
For Kateryna, the online sessions and networking opportunities were the most beneficial. "The program provided insightful workshops on job search strategies, CV writing, and interview techniques, which helped me refine my approach. Additionally, coaching sessions gave me personalized feedback and boosted my confidence."
Beyond technical skills, JobOnTrack also provided a sense of belonging. "Networking with other participants and professionals opened doors to new opportunities and made me feel less alone in my job search."
Before joining the program, Kateryna took a passive approach to searching for a job, she applied for jobs and then waited. JobOnTrack transformed her mindset. "I learned how to write motivation letters and significantly improved my CV. The process of job searching became not just a necessity but an engaging and dynamic experience. It felt like an exciting and challenging game. The gambler in me turned on, and I became unstoppable in reaching my goal. Even when I received rejections, I was no longer as discouraged as before. Instead, I saw them as part of the journey, fueling my motivation to keep going."
Beyond job applications, the program also helped her integrate into Dutch society. "Our mentor shared valuable insights about Dutch culture, societal values, and professional expectations. Understanding these aspects made me feel more confident in both work and everyday situations."
Now, Kateryna is working in a role that aligns closely with her dream job. As a communication coordinator at a psychological center, she helps Ukrainian displaced people access psychological support. "This role allows me to assist many people while also integrating into Dutch society through partnerships with local municipalities. Moreover, I have the opportunity to share my psychological knowledge with diverse audiences by providing informative and interactive workshops on mental healthcare. I truly feel that my work is meaningful, and I am grateful for the impact I can make in both individual lives and the broader community."
For anyone looking for a job in the Netherlands, Kateryna advises staying proactive and open to learning. "Take advantage of programs like JobOnTrack, build your network, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The right opportunity will come, but you need to create the conditions for it to find you."
Kateryna is grateful for the support she received from JobOnTrack and hopes her experience inspires others to take the next step in their career journey. "This program gave me not only the tools to find a job but also the confidence to embrace new opportunities with enthusiasm and determination."
