Changing careers or exploring a new path can be both exciting and challenging—especially when you’ve just left a long-term job and aren’t sure what’s next. Yifan Zhao shares her personal story about stepping out of her comfort zone, discovering true passion, and how JobOn unexpectedly became the place that helped her find direction and fulfillment. Her experience shows that sometimes, the first step toward your dream job starts with saying “yes” to new opportunities.
My name is Yifan Zhao, born and raised in Beijing of China. When I was 17, my intuition led me to New Zealand to explore life in another hemisphere. There, I had great fun in studying accounting and working at a global dairy company. Later, I got offered another position within the organization but at the Amsterdam office, that was what brought me to the wonderful Netherlands.
Discovering JobOn by chance
The "Dream Job Game" event, advertised on a library brochure in Hilversum, immediately caught my eye. I had just left my corporate job after almost a decade and was excited to discover my next path. The brochure's event had already passed, but the JobOn Talent Program was happening the very next day. So I thought, "Why not?"
I showed up at JobOn's office the next morning without even being able to sign up. As if it were meant to be, there was an extra spot available for the program. That's how my journey at JobOn as an event manager began.
A safe space to be yourself
For me, JobOn quickly became so much more than just events or workshops. It felt like a safe, open, and limitless stage where I could truly be whoever I'd dreamt of being. With a deep desire for a more meaningful career path, I immediately jumped into action, preparing my very first JobOn event. The topic? The very one I'd missed at the library: The Dream Job Game!
Looking back at that event almost a year later, I realized the topic wasn't a random choice. Through hosting the Dream Job Game and a few other events focused on discovering values and passion, I uncovered my own deepest passion: helping and inspiring others to live and work joyfully and fulfillingly.
More than just personal growth
For this, I am so incredibly grateful. Thanks to JobOn's limitless stage, I not only uncovered my desired path, but more importantly, I found the courage to pursue what brings me true fulfillment.
Beyond personal growth, JobOn also brought unexpected and cherished friendships. The supportive environment connected me with like-minded individuals, creating bonds formed through shared experiences and a mutual desire for growth.
Advice to those searching for their path
Sometimes I wish I have found JobOn sooner, or more precisely, that I have put myself out of my comfort zone sooner. If I could share some advice with my younger self or with anyone who are looking for new opportunities or different career paths, I'd simply say this:
You will be pleasantly surprised when you give yourself a real chance to try new things, to meet new people & to gain new ideas and inspiration. Your purpose, your journey to fulfillment and perhaps even some wonderful friendships, might be waiting just beyond the edges of your comfort zone.
